Strengths:

Gap shooting ability is absolutely off the charts. Consistently makes plays behind the line of scrimmage due to his burst, awareness, and shedding ability. Long makes most of his plays when coming downhill to stop the run, or working off the blitz. Shows great closing speed to get in range of the ball carrier, but also a very good wrap up tackler. Similar to a running back, Long does a really nice job of getting skinny when working through the line of scrimmage shooting gaps. Active hands at the point of attack which allows him to free himself from blockers in space. Possesses long arms that allow him to corral ball carriers with ease. While being a bit undersized, Long uses his smaller frame as an advantage when slipping through blocks, and weaving through the open field. Did a nice job in zone coverage covering the underneath routes. Plays with great athleticism both laterally and vertically to make plays against the run. Big hitter that makes his presence known when he meets you in the hole.

Weaknesses:

Can be a bit too aggressive when coming downhill, which can result in plays getting past him, or the ball going over his head on play-fakes. Needs to improve his coverage ability when manning up tight ends and running backs. Can get a bit too grabby, and struggled with getting caught with his eyes in the backfield. Field vision can be a bit inconsistent when working through trash laterally. Lacks the ideal change of direction and lower body flexibility to be effective as a rusher or making plays consistently in the open field.

Overall Review:

What West Virginia LB David Long Jr. brings to the table is a tremendous nose for the football, insane athletic ability, the ability to make plays sideline-to-sideline, and in the backfield due to his quickness. Listed at 5’11” and 225-lbs, it’s apparent that Long doesn’t have the ideal measurables at LB in the NFL, but his play-making ability should certainly catch teams attention. Long does a tremendous job of avoiding blockers, getting off blocks, and shooting gaps to make plays in the backfield. In his four years at West Virginia, Long tallied 246 tackles (39.5 for loss), 12.5 sacks, and 10 passes defended. Long is a guy who could come in and immediately make a difference on special teams, while also having success playing off the ball, and running to the football.
